Connecting Rods Manufacturing Methods
Connecting rods can be produced via casting or forging methods. Forging is a manufacturing process, involves shaping and forming metal using compressive force. Casting is a another manufacturing process where liquid materials are poured into a mould and allowed to solidify into a shape. The solidified part is then removed from the mould to complete the process.
Steps of Hot Forging Process
1, Blanking Process: In the first step, the raw material is cut into the desired shape and size for forging.
2, Heating Process: The blank will be heated to a temperature above its recrystallisation temperature to make it more malleable and easier to shape.
3, Roll Forging Process: The heated blank is then passed through a series of rollers to shape it into the desired form.
4, Closed Die Forging: The shaped blank is then placed into a die and compressed to its final shape.
5, Trimming and Punching: Excess material is trimmed off, and holes are punched where needed.
6, Heat Treatment: The forged connecting rod undergoes heat treatment to improve its mechanical properties, such as strength and toughness.
7, Shot Blasting: The connecting rod surface is cleaned using shot blasting to remove any scale or other impurities
8, Correction: Any final corrections or adjustments are made to ensure the connecting rod meets the required specifications.
Steps of Casting Process
1, Patternmaking Process: A pattern is created in the shape of the desired final product. This pattern is usually made of high-precision metal.
2, Moulding Process: The pattern is placed in a flask and packed with sand to create a mould. The sand is compacted around the pattern to ensure that it holds its shape.
3, Melting Process: The metal to be cast is melted in a furnace and brought to the correct pouring temperature.
4, Pouring Process: The molten metal is carefully poured into the mould and allowed to solidify.
5, Cooling Process: The metal can cool and solidify entirely within the mould.
6, Removal Process: Once the metal solidifies, the mould is broken apart, and the casting is removed.
7, Finishing Process: The casting and any excess material are cleaned. Further finishing processes may be required, such as machining or heat treatment.
